US Senator Rand Paul has said that the investigation into Russia's alleged meddling in the US election in 2016 was "highly political," noting that some US media outlet had become too "fixated" on the Russia issue.
MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 21st August, 2018) US Senator Rand Paul has said that the investigation into Russia's alleged meddling in the US election in 2016 was "highly political," noting that some US media outlet had become too "fixated" on the Russia issue.
"This is a highly political investigation. The only thing that has come out of it so far - we seem to be indicting Russians over something, hacking somebody's emails. And we seem to be indicting people like Paul Manafort for something that may has no connection really to Russia or Donald Trump," Paul told the Fox news.
The senator added that some media outlets had become "so fixated" on the Russia issue.
"Indeed, there are so many details of the Russia thing that I think all of us have to sort of re-read the stories to catch up on exactly what the timeline [is], who said what, where. It is very confusing," Paul said.
The United States has repeatedly accused Russia of interfering in the 2016 presidential election and US Special Counsel Robert Mueller's team is investigating allegations of collusion between Russia and the US President Donald Trump's campaign. Trump and top Russian officials have repeatedly refuted the allegations.
Manafort, Trump's former campaign manager, is facing several charges of tax and bank fraud which is part of Mueller's investigation into Russia's alleged meddling in the US presidential election. US authorities began monitoring Manafort and his financial dealings when he joined the election campaign of Donald Trump. The former aide did consultancy work in Ukraine and kept non-disclosed earnings in bank accounts of other foreign countries.
