Trudeau Discusses Human Rights, Trade During Call With Pakistan's New Prime Minister

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 21st August, 2018) Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in a statement that he and newly-elected Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan discussed by phone human rights, trade and other mutual interests.

"In discussing human rights, girls education, trade, climate change, and refugees, PM [Imran Khan] & I had a great phone conversation today," Trudeau said via Twitter on Monday. "Congratulations again, Imran, on forming Pakistans new government - I look forward to working together for people in both our countries."

Khan, who leads Pakistan's ruling Tehreek-e-Insafh party, was elected prime minister on Friday following a vote in the National Assembly, where he gained the support of 176 lawmakers out of a total of 272. Khan received almost twice as many votes as those cast for his main rival, Shehbaz Sharif, the president of the center-right Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz party.

On Saturday, Khan was sworn in as Pakistan's 22nd prime minister and went on to appoint his cabinet of ministers, which took the oath of office earlier on Monday.
