ISLAMABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 20th Aug, 2018 ) :An health expert has advised people to avoid keeping meat in refrigerator for more than 10 days as such practice destroyed the proteins and affected its hygiene, which could cause fatal diseases like food-poisoning and gastrointestinal complications.
"Keeping meat in refrigerators for more than 10 days is not a good practice because such freezing exterminates the proteins," Dr Zaeem Ahmed, a family physician Monday said while talking to APP. He suggested that fresh and healthy meat should always be used to stay away from gastrointestinal diseases because such complications even may lead to malfunctioning of liver, kidneys and brain.
He said major reasons for GI diseases were consumption of unhealthy meat and improperly cooked food as bacteria flourished rapidly in such a meat. "Liver diseases can cause hepatitis and liver disorder, which are fatal at an advanced stage," he added.
He said sick animals' meat called 'Laap' hardly carried any proteins and vitamins rather use of such meat was a source of various diseases in human beings.
Laap can also cause 'botulism' a disease in which intestines are paralyzed and diarrhoea goes on non-stop in children that could lead to death, while in adults it might cause paralysis of a part of body, brain or other complications.
He was of the view that eating food regularly from hotels, stalls and open places often cause GI diseases, terming meat at these places "unhygienic." He also advised that people should avoid meat, if they were not sure about its hygiene. If healthy meat was unavailable, people should use pulses, eggs and milk to get proteins. Pulses are second source of getting the required proteins after meat, while one glass of milk or one egg could provide sufficient protein to human beings.
He suggested that people should use seasonal vegetables, which are low cost and full of vitamins, minerals and even proteins. Spinach is another good source of getting proteins.
