S.Korean Official Says North Positive About Co-Hosting 2021 Asian Winter Games - Reports

Choi Moon-soon, the governor of the South Korean northeastern Gangwon province, said that North Korean officials reacted positively to his offer to jointly host the 2021 Asian Winter Games, media reported on Monday.

TOKYO (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 20th August, 2018) Choi Moon-soon, the governor of the South Korean northeastern Gangwon province, said that North Korean officials reacted positively to his offer to jointly host the 2021 Asian Winter Games, media reported on Monday.

Choi made his offer during his trip to North Korea on August 10-19, the South Korean Yonhap news agency reported.

"Co-hosting the Asian Winter Games is a matter to be discussed by the leaders of South and North Korea. I'll report it to the government but it remains to be seen whether the proposal will be adopted by both sides," Choi said as quoted by Yonhap.

Moreover, during Chois trip to the North, Seoul and Pyongyang reportedly agreed to hold the fifth edition of the Ari Sports Cup U-15 International Football Tournament in South Korea in October, and the sixth edition of the tournament in 2019 in North Korea.

The relations between Pyongyang and Seoul have recently seen a thaw in various areas, including sports. In February, the teams from North and South Korea marched together during the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in South Korea's Pyeongchang, and competed together in women's ice hockey.

In the area of politics, the two Koreas also saw a rapprochement. South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un held two bilateral meetings earlier this year and are expected to hold another summit in fall.
