NEW DELHI (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 20th August, 2018) A US official delegation headed by State Secretary Mike Pompeo is expected to arrive in Islamabad for talks with new Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan in the first days of September, an informed source in the Pakistani capital told Sputnik on Monday.

"As far as we know, a one-day visit of State Secretary Pompeo is planned, after which [Pompeo] will go to New Delhi to participate in the first ministerial meeting in the 2+2 format. In Islamabad he is expected to hold talks with the new Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic [of Pakistan] Imran Khan," the source said.

Khan was elected the prime minister last week after 176 members of the 342-strong parliament supported his candidacy. The voting followed the July 25 general elections in the country.

If Pompeos visit is confirmed, the US state secretary will be the first foreign official to meet the new Pakistani prime minister.

On September 6, Pompeo and the Pentagon chief, James Mattis, are scheduled to hold talks with their Indian counterparts in New Delhi.
