One Person Dead, 5 Injured During Uganda Protests Over Mistreatment Of Lawmakers - Police

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 20th August, 2018) One person died and five others were injured during Sunday protests in the Central Region of Uganda against the beating of several lawmakers in response to the stoning of a presidential convoy, the Ugandan Police Force said.

On Monday, supporters of independent parliamentary candidate Kasiano Wadri attacked the convoy of Ugandas President Yoweri Museveni in the northern town of Arua ahead of a parliamentary by-election. During the attack, a vehicle bearing the presidential coat of arms had its windscreen smashed. Following the incident, Ugandas authorities reportedly arrested five lawmakers on suspicion of organizing the attack on the president.

"Our officers at Mityana hospital have confirmed that the six patients admitted there as a result of the morning violent riots, one Mr. Samuel Ssekiziyivu a resident of Myanzi, Kasanda District has breathed his last. It is regrettable and sad. The other five, one Mr. Ssengooba Derrick has been discharged. The four are still undergoing medical attention," the polices representative, Emilian Kayima, said, as quoted in the statement.

The police forces are already probing the officer, who shot the citizen, Kayima added, urging the members of the public to refrain from taking part in violent unrest.
