Egyptian Foreign Ministry Offers Condolences Over Death Of Former UN Chief Kofi Annan

CAIRO (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 19th August, 2018) Egypt extends its heartfelt condolences over the death of former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, a spokesman for the Egyptian Foreign Ministry told Sputnik, lauding the late diplomats international peace efforts.

The ex-UN chief passed away on Saturday in Switzerland at the age of 80 in his family circle after a short illness.

"We deeply regret the passing of former Secretary-General Kofi Annan and express our deepest condolences to his family, Africa and the international community. The deceased left a mark on the establishment of peace and development and will forever remain a symbol and pride for every African and everyone who stands for peace," Ahmed Abu Zeid said.

Annan was born in 1938 in Ghana. He served as the head of the United Nations in 1997-2006, winning the 2001 Nobel Peace prize. In 2007, he founded the Kofi Annan Foundation, a non-profit focused on support for democracy, fighting hunger and drug trafficking.
