Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived overnight in the southern state of Kerala to assess relief efforts after a record flooding killed hundreds and displaced hundreds of thousands.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 18th August, 2018) Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived overnight in the southern state of Kerala to assess relief efforts after a record flooding killed hundreds and displaced hundreds of thousands.

"The Prime Minister is reviewing the flood situation in Kerala at a high-level meeting," the prime ministers office tweeted.

Modi reached the state capital of Thiruvananthapuram on Friday night and was flown to Kochi airport on Saturday, where he was greeted by the provincial governor and ministers.

The monsoon season began in the region in June but rainfall intensified last week, prompting Indian Army to step in, according to the Defense Ministry.

The military is using 53 boats to take residents to safety, while also working to restore access to hard-to-reach villages by building temporary foot bridges.
