Pakistan's lower house (National Assembly) lawmakers on Friday elected Imran Khan, the leader of centrist Tehreek-e-Insaf party, as the country's prime minister, local media reported.

According to Geo tv, the candidacy of the 65-year-old Khan was supported by 176 lawmakers. His main rival - the head of the former ruling party Pakistan Muslim League (N) Shahbaz Sharif - secured 96 votes.
�Elections to the National Assembly of Pakistan, as well as to regional legislative bodies of the country were held on July 25. According to the results of the vote, Tehreek-e-Insaf received 115 out of 272 seats in the parliament thus failing to gain simple majority to form the government.
Shortly thereafter, the Tehreek-e-Insaf entered into negotiations with other political groups and managed to form a ruling coalition, guaranteeing the support of 180 deputies out of 342.
