The number of people who died due to devastating floods in India's western state of Kerala has increased to 324, the office of Kerala state Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said on Friday.

Earlier in the day, the death toll stood at 167 people, according to media reports. The floods in Kerala began on August 8. The largest monsoon to hit India over the past century also resulted in deadly landslides.

"Kerala is facing its worst flood in 100 years. 80 dams opened, 324 lives lost and 223,139 people are in about 1500+ relief camps," the Chief Minister's Office wrote on Twitter, urging donations from people to help those affected by the disaster.

Moreover, the states chief minister again spoke with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday and asked for more assistance from the center to tackle the crisis.

"Spoke to Prime Minister Modi again today. Requested more central forces and choppers for rescue work. PM assured immediate help," Vijayan wrote on Twitter.

The India Meteorological Department said earlier in the day that the rainfall causing the flooding would continue until Saturday
