The number of people who died due to devastating floods in India's western state of Kerala reached 167, local media reported on Friday.

NEW DELHI (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 17th August, 2018) The number of people who died due to devastating floods in India's western state of Kerala reached 167, local media reported on Friday.

Thursdays reports suggested that the death toll from the natural disaster stood at 97.

The India Meteorological Department said that the rainfall causing the flooding would continue until Saturday, the NDTV broadcaster reported.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said earlier on Friday that he had discussed the situation in Kerala with the states Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan over the phone.

"Later this evening, I will be heading to Kerala to take stock of the unfortunate situation due to flooding," Modi wrote on Twitter.

The floods in Kerala began on August 8. The largest monsoon to hit India over the past century also resulted in deadly landslides.
