Japan 'Regrets' UN Experts' Call to Protect Fukushima Clean-Up Workers - Mission in Geneva

Japan considers the call of UN experts to protect workers decontaminating the damaged Fukushima Daichi Nuclear Power Station from possible exploitation and misinformation "regrettable," the UN statement is based on one-sided information, Japan's Permanent Mission to the International Organizations in Geneva said on Friday

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 17th August, 2018) Japan considers the call of UN experts to protect workers decontaminating the damaged Fukushima Daichi Nuclear Power Station from possible exploitation and misinformation "regrettable," the UN statement is based on one-sided information, Japan's Permanent Mission to the International Organizations in Geneva said on Friday.

On Thursday, the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has called on the Japanese authorities to protect workers currently decontaminating the damaged Fukushima Daichi Nuclear Power Station. UN human rights experts noted that migrant workers and homeless people, who were reportedly hired for clean-up works, could possibly be exploited and misinformed about the potential risks of being exposed to harmful nuclear radiation.

"It is regrettable that special rapporteurs issued a statement based on one-sided information, despite sincere efforts taken by the [Japanese] government Unnecessarily fueled anxiety along with confusion may further hurt people in the disaster area, already suffering from harmful rumors," the diplomatic mission said in a statement, as quoted by the NHK broadcaster.

In March 2011, a 9.0-magnitude offshore earthquake triggered a 46-foot tsunami that hit Japan's Fukushima nuclear plant, leading to the leakage of radioactive materials and shutdown of the plant. The accident is considered to be the world's worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl in 1986.
