MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 16th August, 2018) The Russian Presidential Property Management Department has selected a contractor for the restoration of the Golden Dome of Havana's Capitol which will cost 642 million rubles ($9.6 million), the state procurement portal said on Thursday.

According to the portal, the Russian Federal budget will fund the project which will be implemented in two stages - from August 15 until November 15 this year and from mid-September till the end of October next year. The contractor was not revealed.

Additionally, a company was chosen to monitor the restoration work at the cost of over 10 million rubles (some $150,000).

In May 2016, Russian upper house speaker Valentina Matvienko said that Russian experts would assist Havana in restoring the Capitol, which was to host the Cuban National Assembly of People's Power, at request of the Cuban authorities.

The 90-year-old Capitol in Havana was inspired by the US Capitol in Washington. The building originally served as home to the Cuban Congress until its dissolution due to the Cuban Revolution in 1959. Most recently used for the Cuban academy of Sciences, the building was closed for restoration eight years ago and opened again in March this year.
