Voice Recognition Technology Unfairly Single Out People With Regional UK Accents - Study

Voice assistants present a targeted struggle for people in the United Kingdom with regional accents, since these individuals are forced to alter the way they speak in order to be understood by their electronic devices, a fresh survey by the Life Science Centre in Newcastle said.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 16th August, 2018) Voice assistants present a targeted struggle for people in the United Kingdom with regional accents, since these individuals are forced to alter the way they speak in order to be understood by their electronic devices, a fresh survey by the Life Science Centre in Newcastle said.

"Ask anyone with a regional accent and they'll tell you the struggles of using automated voice recognition ... The technology has moved forward, but the inclusivity to cater for regional accents has not," Life Science Centre CEO Linda Conlon said, as cited by the Sky news.

According to the study, which surveyed 536 visitors of the Life Science Centre museum, an overwhelming majority of people with non-traditional pronunciation (79 percent) struggled to have their voice recognized by a device and thus had to change the way they spoke to be understood.

Voice recognition technologies such as the Google Home assistant, microsoft's Cortana, Amazon's Alexa and Apple's Siri have been gaining popularity over the past couple of years. Tech market analysts have estimated that the global market for voice recognition software will grow from about $1.1 billion last year to some $6.9 billion by 2025.
