New Data Shows 29 Percent of Chicago Shootings Committed by 130 Police Officers - Reports

Nearly 29 percent of shootings in Chicago over a 12-year period were carried out by just 130 police officers, US media reported on Thursday.

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 16th August, 2018) Nearly 29 percent of shootings in Chicago over a 12-year period were carried out by just 130 police officers, US media reported on Thursday.

"New data obtained by the Invisible Institute reveals that nearly a third - 29 percent -of Chicagos shootings between January 2004 and March 2016 were committed by only 130 officers," the online news outlet The Intercept reported.

While over 95 percent of Chicago law enforcement officers never fired their guns in the 12-year period, the same 130 cops did so repeatedly, the report added.

Moreover, the report noted that the law enforcement officers responsible for the shootings demonstrated a troubling pattern of behavior before the incidents. This pattern suggests that some of the killings could have been predicted and stopped, the report said.

The Justice Department has tried to enforce a program for troubled policemen in the past, but none of its efforts were completed or brought actual results, the report added.

The Invisible Institute is a journalism production company based on the South Side of Chicago. The company promotes reform to the Chicago Police Department (CPD) through the documentation and disclosure of records.

Chicago has a long history of violence and crime that has claimed hundreds of lives over the past few years. The most recent spate of shootings over one weekend in August left 12 people dead and more than 50 injured. CPD officials said that they registered 33 shooting incidents on August 4 and August 5. Local authorities arrested 46 people on gun charges related to the events of the two days of violence.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel said the violence was likely connected to gang clashes and noted that people in the area know about the conflict, but don't help the police. He called on communities to take the responsibility and report potential crime.
