World renowned US singer Aretha Franklin died at the age of 76, her family said in a statement on Thursday.

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 16th August, 2018) World renowned US singer Aretha Franklin died at the age of 76, her family said in a statement on Thursday.

"Franklin, 76, passed away on Thursday morning at her home in Detroit, Michigan," the statement said.

The official cause of death was pancreatic cancer, the statement noted.

"We have lost the matriarch and rock of our family. The love she had for her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins knew no bounds," the statement said.

The singers family thanked her admirers for their prayers, but asked them to respect their privacy at this time.

"We have felt your love to Aretha and it brings us comfort to know that her legacy will live on," the statement said.

Aretha Franklin, who has been referred to as the American "Queen of Soul," was honored with numerous awards during her career, including 18 Grammy awards.
