The use of firearms by French police officers rose by 54 percent in 2017 from the previous year, local media reported Thursday, citing the latest report of the French General Inspectorate of the National Police (IGPN).

PARIS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 16th August, 2018) The use of firearms by French police officers rose by 54 percent in 2017 from the previous year, local media reported Thursday, citing the latest report of the French General Inspectorate of the National Police (IGPN).

According to Le Parisien newspaper, there were about 400 registered cases of French police using firearms in 2017.

The report also showed that in the period between July 2017 and May 2018, a total of 14 people were killed as result of police intervention. Some of them were shot while trying to flee, while others committed suicide during police raids, the newspaper added.

According to the outlet, the increase in the use of firearms can be linked to the passing of a new law in February 2017 that aimed to prevent terrorist attacks; the legislation broadened officers right to legitimate self-defense.
