Pakistan Court Rules to Block Twitter in 15 Days If Gov't Requests Not Fulfilled- Official

The Islamabad High Court has ordered to block Twitter in the country within 15 days if the social network refuses to comply with the authorities' request to remove and block objectionable content, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) chairman said.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 16th August, 2018) The Islamabad High Court has ordered to block Twitter in the country within 15 days if the social network refuses to comply with the authorities' request to remove and block objectionable content, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) chairman said.

"The court has ordered to block Twitter within 15 days if it doesnt comply with governments requests," the chairman said while addressing the Senate Standing Committee on Cabinet Secretariat on Wednesday, as quoted by GEO tv broadcaster.

The chairman added that numerous investigations are being conducted against "social media users who run fake accounts or spread false news."

According to the head of PTAs internet Policy and Web Analysis, Nisar Ahmed, Twitter, unlike other platforms such as Facebook, YouTube and other social media, have been ignoring nearly all government requests regarding blocking "certain offensive" content.

The authorities of Pakistan have repeatedly blocked access to popular social media networks for refusal to prevent the spread of fake news and other undesired content. Facebook, in particular, was blocked twice in 2008 and 2010, while YouTube was blocked in 2012 for over two years, according to local media.
