More than 40 bridges in the German capital of Berlin remain in an insufficient condition, which raises concerns in the wake of the deadly bridge collapse in the Italian city of Genoa, local media reported on Thursday.

On Tuesday, a section of the Morandi Bridge in Genoa collapsed leaving almost 40 people dead.
According to data provided by the Berlins Senate Transport Committee, in 2017, there were 827 bridges in Berlin with 230 of them being in good or very good condition and 553 in satisfactory condition, the Berliner Morgenpost newspaper reported.
Out of 44 other bridges 42 were in unsatisfactory condition and two more in bad condition.
A member of Berlins parliament, Frank Scholtysek, representing Eurosceptic Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, said, as quoted by Berliner Morgenpost, that the figures showed that 5 percent of Berlins bridges were unsafe.
