Paraguay's New President Vows To End Impunity

Paraguay's new president, Mario Abdo Benitez, was sworn in on Wednesday, vowing to create a strong and independent justice system to end impunity
ASUNCION, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 16th Aug, 2018 ) :Paraguay's new president, Mario Abdo Benitez, was sworn in on Wednesday, vowing to create a strong and independent justice system to end impunity.
"Impunity is the cancer we must defeat," said Benitez in his first speech as president, adding that "our obligation is to listen to them (Paraguayans) and not be indifferent to their just demands. This is our opportunity to turn that indignation into hope." The president pledged that if anyone in his government faces allegations of misconduct, he will be the first to cooperate with the justice system.
"We were elected to serve. I will not judge anyone, but I will not be complacent in the face of misconduct," Benitez said. "I prefer applause on the way out and not on the way in."Benitez, 46, entered politics in 2005 as a member of the Republican National Reconstruction movement withinthe long-ruling conservative Colorado Party. He won the general elections in April and his term ends in 2023.
