MEXICO CITY (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 16th August, 2018) The Brazilian Workers Party (PT) has announced it has registered jailed ex-president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva as its candidate in this Octobers election.
"Its official! Lula is the Workers Party candidate for presidency," the party said in a statement on its website on Wednesday.
Papers were submitted to Brazils Supreme Court hours before the Wednesday deadline passed. The court is expected to issue a ruling on whether he can run.
The 72-year-old began serving his 12-year prison sentence in April on charges of accepting a luxury apartment as a bribe from a construction firm in return for concessions, a claim he denied. Lula served as president from 2003 to 2010 and remains very popular.
