Trump's Order to Revoke Brennan's Security Clearance Punishment for Criticism - Lawmaker

US President Donald Trump's decision to revoke former CIA Director John Brennan's security clearance is a form of punishment for criticism and a retaliatory measure, Congressman Don Beyer said in a statement on Wednesday.

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 16th August, 2018) US President Donald Trump's decision to revoke former CIA Director John Brennan's security clearance is a form of punishment for criticism and a retaliatory measure, Congressman Don Beyer said in a statement on Wednesday.

"Trump is clearly punishing John Brennan for criticizing him, cracking down on a dissent and retaliating against a private citizens free speech," Beyer said via Twitter.

The congressman's statement comes minutes after the White House announced Brennan's security clearance would be taken away. Moreover, Trump is considering doing the same to other former officials, including ex-FBI Director James Comey and former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper.

Beyer called the Trump administration's move "a flimsy excuse to set a terrible precedent" and argued the US president was acting like a dictator in this case.

Brennan appeared on MSNBC on Tuesday and spoke about Trump's policies and his fitness for the office. The former CIA chief said that Trump would never comprehend "what it means to be a president" and called him the most divisive leader in the United States.

Brennan led the Central Intelligence Agency from 2013 to 2017 during the presidency of Barack Obama.
