WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 16th August, 2018) The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has investigated a series of cyberattacks that targeted Dr. Hans Keirstead, a Democratic opponent of Republican Congressman Dana Rohrabacher, local media reported on Wednesday.

The alleged hacking attempts and the FBI's efforts to respond to them are detailed in dozens of emails and forensic records obtained by Rolling Stone magazine.

Keirstead is a stem-cell scientist and the head of a biomedical research company. He finished third in California's Primary race on June 5, falling 125 votes short of advancing to the general election.

According to the report, the cyberattacks against Keirstead began in August 2017. The first cyberattack was similar to one committed on Hillary Clinton's campaign manager John Podesta. Keirstead reportedly received an email to his work address, which he mistook for a letter from microsoft Office, and entered his password. Since December, hackers have targeted the website of his company and his corporate Twitter account, the report said.

Experts believe that it is nearly impossible to determine who was behind the attacks without help from law enforcement, the report noted.

The FBI did not respond to requests by Rolling Stone for comment on its findings.
