Japan Tests Space Elevator Technology in Fukushima - Reports

Japanese researchers at the Fukushima Robot Test Field have conducted tests on a device designed to deliver freight into space using cables, local media reported on Wednesday.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 15th August, 2018) Japanese researchers at the Fukushima Robot Test Field have conducted tests on a device designed to deliver freight into space using cables, local media reported on Wednesday.

According to the NHK broadcaster, the device carrying a robot ascended a hundred-meter-long cable suspended from a balloon.

The space elevator is one of the most awaited-for celestial technologies which, if implemented, may be able to carry cargo and people to space through a cable without expensive rocket carriers. The cable should have a counterweight at the other end to move together with the earth's rotation. At present, however, the scientists have not yet found materials for the cable which can successfully keep the counterweight and the weight of the cable itself which should extend to about 36,000 kilometers (over 22,000 miles) from the earth's surface.
