UN's Egeland Urges Baghdad to Leave Schools for IDPs in Kurdistan Open

Jan Egeland, the secretary general of the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) and head of the United Nations humanitarian task force for Syria, urged the Iraqi government on Wednesday to refrain from closing schools for displaced children in Iraqi Kurdistan.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 15th August, 2018) Jan Egeland, the secretary general of the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) and head of the United Nations humanitarian task force for Syria, urged the Iraqi government on Wednesday to refrain from closing schools for displaced children in Iraqi Kurdistan.

"Has Iraq government forgotten education is fundamental human right, guaranteed by its Constitution? Schools for displaced children in #Kurdistan region must stay open. Closures will have devastating impact; some children have already missed 3yrs of school," Egeland wrote on Twitter.

On Tuesday, media reported that Baghdad had decided to close over 400 schools for internally displaced people in Kurdistan Region, also recalling teachers. In Erbil, the authorities reportedly aim at closing 70 percent of schools.
