UK Gov't to Discuss Pedestrianizing Parliament Square in London Following Attack - Police

The UK authorities will discuss pedestrianizing the square in front of the parliament building in London in light of a recent car-ramming incident, UK Met Police Commissioner Cressida Dick said on Wednesday.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 15th August, 2018) The UK authorities will discuss pedestrianizing the square in front of the parliament building in London in light of a recent car-ramming incident, UK Met Police Commissioner Cressida Dick said on Wednesday.

On Tuesday morning, a Ford Fiesta deliberately crashed into the security barrier outside the Houses of Parliament after having collided with several cyclists and pedestrians. The driver was detained shortly after the incident, which the investigators have classified as a terrorist attack due to the fact that it happened in a popular tourist location.

"Whether that area outside should be pedestrianised further is a matter that will be discussed no doubt between the parliamentary authorities, us, the intelligence agencies, the local authorities and the mayor," Dick told LBC radio.

Over the past few years, the terror threat in the United Kingdom has remained high against the backdrop of numerous deadly terrorist acts, such as the attack on London Bridge, Manchester Arena, Finsbury Park Mosque, and Westminster Bridge, where a British national drove his car into pedestrians before smashing into the fence surrounding the Houses of Parliament. According to Europol, 36 people died in terror acts in the United Kingdom last year, which was more than in any other European country.
