India Planning To Send Manned Mission Into Space By 2022 - Prime Minister

NEW DELHI (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 15th August, 2018) India is planning to send a manned mission into space by 2022 or even earlier, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Wednesday at a celebration of the Independence Day.

"I am happy to announce that by 2022, which marks the 75th anniversary of India's independence, we are planning to launch a manned space mission. We will send an Indian to space in 2022, or even earlier. A son or a daughter of India will set off for space with a tricolor in hands," Modi said.

The prime minister said the country was proud of its scientists.

"They have already launched over 100 satellites into space ... and successfully carried out a Mars mission," Modi said.

India has been developing a space program since 1947, when it became independent.

According to local media, the Indian Space Research Organisation is already working on spacesuits, equipment and food for astronauts, as well as on manned spacecraft.
