Turkey, Iraq Agree on Cooperation in Fight Against PKK Militants - Erdogan

Ankara and Baghdad have reached an agreement on cooperation in combating militants from the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), listed as a terrorist organization in Turkey, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Tuesday.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 14th August, 2018) Ankara and Baghdad have reached an agreement on cooperation in combating militants from the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), listed as a terrorist organization in Turkey, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Tuesday.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Abadi paid a one-day working visit to Ankara.

"We have come to a mutual agreement to be in full cooperation against the [PKK] terrorists," Erdogan said at a joint press conference with Abadi as quoted by the Hurriyet newspaper.

Tensions between Ankara and the Kurds escalated in July 2015 when a ceasefire between Turkey and the PKK collapsed over a series of terror attacks allegedly committed by the PKK members. The Turkish forces are involved in anti-PKK raids across the country and in northern Iraq.

The PKK's main base is reportedly located in the Qandil Mountains, an Iraqi mountainous area near the Iranian border.
