Moldovan Opposition Politician Calls for Initiating Criminal Proceedings Against President

Andrei Nastase, the leader of Moldovan opposition party Dignity and Truth Platform, called on Tuesday for the initiation of criminal proceedings against the country's president, Igor Dodon, over alleged "illicit enrichment.

CHISINAU (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 14th August, 2018) Andrei Nastase, the leader of Moldovan opposition party Dignity and Truth Platform, called on Tuesday for the initiation of criminal proceedings against the country's president, Igor Dodon, over alleged "illicit enrichment."

"I demand that the prosecutor's office open a criminal case under Article 330/2 on illicit enrichment. I want you to consider this post as my official statement," Nastase wrote in a post on his Facebook page.

According to Nastase, despite the fact that the Moldovan president had been engaged in public service most of his life and lived off the salary of an official, he was "throwing money around" and "lived in a castle."

Under Moldovan law, illicit enrichment is punishable by a fine or prison sentence of up to 15 years.

The opposition party's leader also criticized in his post Dodon's decision to approve a bill on capital amnesty, arguing that it could lead to money laundering.

On Thursday, the Moldovan president announced that he would approve a set of bills as part of a national fiscal reform. The draft legislation, in particular, provides for limiting the powers of the country's Information and Security Service in investigating economic crimes, and eliminating fines for late payments of taxes and duties. The bills also decrease value-added tax for some sectors of the economy and cut social security taxes.
