The UN World Food Programme (WFP) in Palestine on Tuesday welcomed the European Union's contribution of 2.95 million euros ($3.6 million) to support food aid to Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 14th August, 2018) The UN World Food Programme (WFP) in Palestine on Tuesday welcomed the European Union's contribution of 2.95 million Euros ($3.6 million) to support food aid to Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
"The funds - channeled through the European Commission's European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations department (ECHO) - will allow around 210,000 extremely poor people to purchase the food of their choice for one and a half months," the WFP said in a press release.
Each family member will have a monthly entitlement of just over $10 put onto their WFP electronic voucher that can be used at selected retail shops, the press release said.
According to ECHO, the European Commission allocated 24 million euros in humanitarian support for Palestine in 2018.
Half of the population in Gaza has been affected by poverty and unemployment after years of deteriorating humanitarian situation, including energy crisis and salary cuts, according to the WFP.
