At least 11 people have been killed in the motorway bridge collapse in the northern Italian city of Genoa, local media reported on Tuesday citing the Italian Interior Ministry.

According to the ANSA news agency, five more people have been seriously injured and taken to a hospital.

Eyewitnesses told the media outlet that a lightning struck the bridge before it collapsed.

"It was just after 11:30 [09:30 GMT] when we saw the lightning bolt hit the bridge and we saw the bridge go down," one of eyewitnesses said, as quoted by the news agency.

Earlier in the day, Genoa's ambulance service director Francesco Bermano said that the incident had claimed lives of "dozens" of people. State Secretary for Infrastructure and Transport Edoardo Rixi said that at least seven people had been killed in the incident, while four people had been rescued.
