KABUL (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 14th August, 2018) Taliban militants have captured a military base in Afghanistan's northern province of Faryab, a spokesman for Shaheen Camp Mohammad Hanif Rezaee told Sputnik.

Earlier in the day, media reported, citing a provincial governor, that that at least 17 Afghan servicemen were killed in a Taliban attack on the military base in Faryab.

"Unfortunately, the news about enemies seizing the Sainia base is true, but we do not have information on the number of people killed and captured," Hanif Rezaee said, adding that the base hosted 76 government troops.

The local council head, Sabgatullah Silab Muavin, for his part, said that militants had seized 14 armored vehicles, weapons and ammunition, and that the fate of dozens of servicemen stationed at the base remained unknown.

Afghanistan has long been destabilized by the conflict between the Taliban movement and the Afghan government. The violence is exacerbated by the activities of various terrorist groups.
