LONDON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 13th August, 2018) The UK government unveiled a plan worth 100 million Pounds ($127 million) on Monday to tackle the growing issue of homelessness and rough sleeping in the country, the UK Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government said.

The plan includes such measures as accommodation for those living in hostels and refuges, mental health treatment as well as a launch of a special fund for financial support, according to the statement.

"Nobody should have to sleep rough, and thats why we must do all we can to help the most vulnerable in our society get the support they need The strategy launched today will help us act to prevent rough sleeping before it happens and make sure targeted support is reaching those that need it," UK Prime Minister Theresa May said, as quoted in the statement.

The new strategy aims to eradicate the reasons why people become homeless in the first place, including the one caused by domestic abuse, modern slavery and the use of spice drug as well as the growing issue of LGBTQ+ homelessness.

The United Kingdom has been hit with an increase in a number of homeless people and rough sleepers in recent years. According to the non-governmental organization Homeless Link, a combination of economic turmoil and a lack of social housing projects have ensured a rise in rough sleeping by 134 percent since 2010.
