Nearly 200 Taliban Militants Killed in Afghanistan's Ghazni Since Friday - Minister

Afghan Defense Minister Tariq Shah Bahrami said at a press conference on Monday that nearly 200 militants belonging to the Taliban radical movement had been eliminated over the past four days in the country's eastern province of Ghazni, which has been besieged by the Taliban movement since Friday.

KABUL (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 13th August, 2018) Afghan Defense Minister Tariq Shah Bahrami said at a press conference on Monday that nearly 200 militants belonging to the Taliban radical movement had been eliminated over the past four days in the country's eastern province of Ghazni, which has been besieged by the Taliban movement since Friday.

On Sunday, the Afghan Interior Ministry reported about 51 killed Taliban militants as a result of two airstrikes on the city of Ghazni in eastern Afghanistan.

"Over the past four days about 194 enemy militants were killed in Ghazni province, including 12 foreign commanders," the minister said.

According to Bahrami, on Monday the country's forces conducted nine airstrikes, killing about 95 militants.

As many as 100 Afghan security officers and 20 civilians were killed in the clashes, the minister added, saying that the figures might change.

On Sunday, local media reported, citing medical services, that at least 103 people died and 133 were injured in clashes between the Taliban movement and the government forces in Ghazni. On Friday, when the first reports of the Taliban offensive emerged, local media said that the radical movement had also suffered losses, with over 100 of their militants killed during the attack.

Afghanistan has long been destabilized by the conflict between the Taliban movement and the Afghan government, exacerbated by the activities of various terrorist groups.
