US Has Made Unacceptable Proposals in NAFTA Talks on Sunset Clause, Other Issues - Trudeau

The United States has made unacceptable proposals during the renegotiations of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), including with respect to the sunset clause, not wanting a dispute resolution system and attempting to get rid of supply management, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in a press conference on Monday.

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 13th August, 2018) The United States has made unacceptable proposals during the renegotiations of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), including with respect to the sunset clause, not wanting a dispute resolution system and attempting to get rid of supply management, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in a press conference on Monday.

"The Americans have put forward some unacceptable proposals around sunset clause, around not wanting a dispute resolution system, but also around wanting to get rid of supply management," Trudeau told reporters. "I've said time and time again, we will defend supply management."

Ottawa will continue to negotiate to ensure the Canadian interests are defended, Trudeau stressed.

Last month, US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said that the United States, Canada and Mexico could sign a renegotiated NAFTA deal by August. Mexican President-elect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador also shared the same optimism.

The current NAFTA agreement has been in place since 1994. US President Donald Trump has threatened to withdraw the United States from NAFTA if a better agreement is not negotiated with Mexico and Canada.
