"[T]he United States is looking to expand its partnerships with the nations of the region where it makes sense to do so," the release said.
The Defense Department explained that the United States aims to develop cooperation with countries in instances that are mutually beneficial, noting that countries in South America are already working with the United States on a number of key military issues.
Earlier on Monday, Mattis arrived in Brazil where he will attempt to assess relations between the United States and militaries in South America, according to the Department of Defense.
Mattis will also visit Argentina, Columbia and Chile after he wraps up scheduled meetings with officials in Brazil.
