Next Round of Hostilities in Gaza Matter of Time - Israeli Defense Minister

Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman believes that the next round of armed confrontation in the Gaza Strip in inevitable and is just a matter of time.

TEL AVIV (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 13th August, 2018) Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman believes that the next round of armed confrontation in the Gaza Strip in inevitable and is just a matter of time.

"When we talk about the next round of hostilities, the question we should ask is not 'whether' [it will take place], but 'when.' I am sure we will do what is necessary and in the best possible way," Libereman said during a trip to Israeli army units deployed along the border with the enclave as quoted by his press service.

The minister, however, did not specify whether it will be a short escalation or a full-scale military operation like it was in 2014.

Last week, Palestinians launched about 180 rockets and mortar shells from Gaza, injuring seven Israelis, while the IDF responded with over 150 airstrikes aimed at military targets in the Gaza Strip. Several Palestinians were killed.

The current wave of tensions between the Israelis and the Palestinians near the Gaza border have been mounting since late March, which marked the beginning of the Palestinian protest campaign against Israel, dubbed the Great March of Return. Nearly 160 Palestinians were killed in clashes since that time. The protests are accompanied with launching arson balloons by Hamas militants into the Israeli territories.

According to Lieberman, since March, 168 Palestinians were killed in the violence and 4,348 were injured.

The escalated violence between the two sides hamper Egypt and the United Nations' attempt to ease the current tensions between Israel and Hamas, which governs the Gaza Strip.
