Romanian Prosecutor's Office Receives Some 30 Complaints From Protesters Injured by Police

Romanian Prosecutor's Office has received about 30 complaints from protesters injured in recent anti-government rallies, military prosecutor Ionel Corbu said on Monday.

CHISINAU (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 13th August, 2018) Romanian Prosecutor's Office has received about 30 complaints from protesters injured in recent anti-government rallies, military prosecutor Ionel Corbu said on Monday.

On Friday, a mass protest in Bucharest left 450 people injured, 70 of whom were hospitalized, including 11 police officers. On Saturday, Romanian President Klaus Iohannis demanded that the prosecution investigate police actions during the rally which reportedly included use of tear gas and water cannons on peaceful protesters. The president denounced the law enforcement actions as too harsh.

"By this time, about 30 complaints have been received from the victims. Originally, it was planned to launch investigation into abusive behavior and abuse of power, but then [suspicions of] dereliction of duty were also added. We have requested papers which relate to the organization of missions on maintaining public order," Corbu told reporters.

The prosecutor said that all those involved would be questioned, including the police officers, and vowed to study the surveillance videos to reconstruct what happened during the protest.

A spokesman for the European Commission said on Monday that rallies in Bucharest were Romania's domestic affairs and refused to comment on the issue.

The protesters called for the dissolution of the parliament, a snap election and an establishment of a unicameral parliament with 300 senators. Also, the rally called for amendments in the tax system, development of agriculture and business, and enhanced partnership with the European Union and NATO.
