At Least 49 Detainees Tortured to Death in Secret Prisons Run by UAE in Yemen - Reports

As many as 49 people have died after being subjected to physical and psychological torture in secret prisons run by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the south of Yemen, the Al Jazeera TV channel reported citing a report provided by the Yemeni military.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 13th August, 2018) As many as 49 people have died after being subjected to physical and psychological torture in secret prisons run by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the south of Yemen, the Al Jazeera tv channel reported citing a report provided by the Yemeni military.

The Yemeni military, which provided the report, has been working with the Saudi-led coalition, which comprises nine states, including the UAE.

According to the report, the United Arab Emirates has organized a total of 27 clandestine prisons including one in Eritrea, where the Emirates' military base is located.

The broadcaster said that the detainees had been subject to rape, electrocution, beatings and sleep deprivation, among others.

In July, Amnesty International appealed to the UAE government to disclose the information regarding detention centers in Yemen, put an end to reported arbitrary arrests and torture and to carry out an investigation into the alleged violations.

The UAE government slammed the watchdog's report denying running any prisons in Yemen and calling the report politically motivated and aimed at hampering the coalition's efforts in backing the Yemeni government.

The civil war in Yemen began in 2015 with the Saudi-led coalition intervening in March and carrying out airstrikes against the rebels and organized a large-scale sea blockade of the country.
