Russia-Jordan Ministerial Talks May Be Delayed Until Early November - Jordanian Ambassador

AMMAN (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 13th August, 2018) Meeting of the Russia-Jordan ministerial commission could be postponed from September to early November due to preparations for the forum of Russian and Jordanian entrepreneurs, Jordanian Ambassador to Russia Amjad Odeh Adaileh told Sputnik in an interview.

According to the diplomat, the meeting was initially scheduled to be held on September 3-5.

"A meeting of the joint commission is planned for early September, but, apparently, negotiations are underway to postpone the meeting until beginning of November," Adaileh said.

The diplomat explained that one of the reasons for possible delay was preparations for the forum of Russian and Jordanian entrepreneurs, which is expected to be held on the eve of the ministerial talks.

Adaileh noted that the Jordanian side sought to hold the forum in Russia and to address a wide range of issues of bilateral economic cooperation with an emphasis on increasing bilateral trade and post-war restoration of Syria. He added that the Jordanian side was in close contact with Russian side in the light of Amman's plans to become a logistic center for Syria's post-war restoration, expressing the hope for recovery of trade volumes after opening of land routes through Syria.

Syria has been torn by civil war since 2011, with the government fighting numerous opposition groups and terrorist organizations. Russia is assisting the country in returning to peaceful life, being a guarantor of the ceasefire regime and having announced in late July the creation of a refugee center in Syria that will receive, relocate and accommodate civilians returning home.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry's latest estimates, there are 1.7 million Syrians in nine countries who had expressed their desire to return to their homes. Jordan is hosting over 668,000 registered Syrian refugees, according to the UN Refugee Agency's data.
