Haroon Shahid slammed for cracking a bad joke on #MeToo

Following the criticism, the singer-actor issued a half-baked apology

Karachi (Pakistan Point News – 4th August, 2018) Singer cum actor Haroon Shahid, who recently appeared opposite to Mahira Khan in 'Verna' that revolved around a rape victim fighting for justice, has cracked a bad joke on the highly sensitive #MeToo campaign that relates to sexual harassment of women.

Quoting a tweet about journalist Gul Bukhari being slapped, Haroon said, “A couple from my side as well please. Mein maroon ga to #MeToo hojai ga!”

The tweet sparked an outrage on social media for his insensitive remarks. Haroon, however, kept arguing.

The remarks also came to Gul Bukhari's attention who couldn't care less about him.

Following the criticism, the singer-actor issued a half-baked apology in which he again targeted Gul Bukhari.

Earlier today, irritated with the outrage, he took to Twitter and said, “I cracked a bad joke yesterday for which I got bashed and rightly so. Apparently, for a few I've become a hate monger, a rapist and a person who supports abusing women with that one tweet. Your hate and article on Dawn don't make me one. I apologise for the joke. Stop fighting!!”

The #MeToo and #Timesup campaigns went global last October when allegations of sexual misconduct by Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein coincided with a number of other major advances in women's rights worldwide.

The trend followed in Pakistan as well as various women from different segments of life opened up about their harassment experiences. Pakistani men, however, fail to understand the concept and we see one such joke every now and then.
