NUST team qualifies for Microsoft Imagine Cup 2018 Global Finals

Project Fe-Amaan – Fetal Monitoring & Analysis – from NUST School of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science (SEECS), won the 1stposition at the Middle East & Africa Region (MEA) semi-finalsof the Microsoft Imagine Cup 2018

Islamabad (Pakistan Point News - 24th May, 2018 ) Project Fe-Amaan – Fetal Monitoring & Analysis – from NUST school of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science (SEECS), won the 1stposition at the middle East & Africa Region (MEA) semi-finalsof the microsoft Imagine Cup 2018. 6 teams from Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkey partook in the competition held on May 23, 2018 at Cairo, Egypt, and the NUST team was declared the winner.

Earlier this month, Fe-Amaan won the National Finals of Microsoft Imagine Cup 2018, standing first among 110 teams from all over Pakistan. With their unassailable performances on the trot, Fe-Amaan has qualified for the World Finals, scheduled to take place in July at Microsoft's Corporate Headquarters at Seattle, USA. The world champion gets up to USD 100,000 cash prize. Microsoft Imagine Cup is the world's premier student technology competition; since 2003, Microsoft has provided a global platform for student teams to bring their novel and disruptive ideas to life.

Pakistan has been ranked the 4th highest participating country for Microsoft Imagine Cup 2018 in the world. Fe Amaan comprises a wearable belt and mobile application, providing remote and automated analysis of fetal health on regular basis without harm to the mother or fetus. In case of anomalies in heart rates or movement patterns, the system generates alerts, enabling timely precautionary measures. The system aims to reduce the high rate of miscarriages in Pakistan.

The country currently ranks highest in child birth fatalities; miscarriages are frequent in rural areas due to lack of proper medical facilities. Fe Amaan will provide a ready solution to problems related to timely and regular monitoring of fetal health. After mass production, it will be used by lady health workers in rural and remote areas. Currently, Fe-Amaan is collaborating with Prof. Dr. Rizwana Chaudhri, Dean & Head of Department Obs/Gynae, Rawalpindi Medical University/Holy Family Hospital, for product testing and evaluation.

​​ The team comprise BS Computer Science students Iqra Irfan, Sami Ullah and Areeba Kamil; Dr Imran Mahmood, Assistant Professor at SEECS, was their faculty supervisor. ​Fe Amaanhas stood out at other competitions, including: • 2018 Imagine Cup Big Idea Challenge - stood among top 50 teams of the world, got USD 600 Azure Pass prize. • Rice 360° Global Health Technologies Design Competition 2018 - placed in top 20 international projects.
