Maryam Nawaz expected to be sentenced for 7 to 14 years: Lawyer

Can only get a bail if sentence is of 3 years or less than that

Islamabad (Pakistan Point News – 5th May, 2018) Renowned journalist Arshad Sharif while talking on a tv program has said that an action against Maryam Nawaz is already being delayed in the references filed against her in National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

He said that if her punishment is announced, it is possible that it is suspended right away and she is asked to go to Jati Umra as this is allowed in the law.

To this, lawyer Shehzad Akbar who was present in the program said that either Nawaz Sharif or Maryam Nawaz is the culprit in this case. Maryam Nawaz is the owner of the property so far. The nature of this case is the same as that of a major crime.

Maryam can get a bail if she is punished but a bail will only be granted if the sentence is of three or less than three years. However, Maryam is expected to be sentenced for at least seven to 14 years, the lawyer said.

“If someone thinks that Maryam can get away with this case then they should know that either everyone will be punished in this case or everyone will be released because punishing only one person is not possible in such a case,” he added.

The hearings on the references against Sharif family are underway in Accountability Court. Many political analysts are of the view that Nawaz and Maryam are expected to be sentenced in these cases.

Former prime minister was disqualified under Article 62-1(f) of the Constitution for holding an Iqama. Following this, the NAB had filed references in the Accountability Court against Nawaz and his family over the ownership of properties in London.
