According to Indian law, the child of an Indian woman would be an Indian national
Lahore (Pakistan Point News – 24th Apr, 2018) Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik and his wife Indian tennis star Sania Mirza have announced the arrival of their baby.
The couple has already decided that the baby will be named Mirza Malik. Shoaib and Sania did not adopt the other country’s citizenship despite getting married to each other. Now a question raises if the child will be an Indian or a Pakistani.
According to Pakistan’s law, had Sania Mirza gotten Pakistan’s nationality after marrying Shoaib Malik, her Indian nationality would have been over but she did not do so.
The Indian law says that the child of an Indian woman would be an Indian citizen. In this context, Shoaib Malik’s baby will be an Indian. However, their child can apply for Pakistani citizenship when 18 years old.
For now, it is unclear as to where the child will be born. It is possible that Sania gives birth to her baby in United Arab Emirates where the couple spends most of their time.
