DUBAI (Pakistan Point News - 4th Apr, 2018 ) The Al Marmoom Conservation Reserve will take centrestage this Friday as Dubai celebrates the World Physical Activity Day and the UN-designated International Day of Sport for Development and Peace with a number of events across the emirate. Supported by Dubai sports Council, the ‘Desert Run at Al Marmoom’ is the first timed running event to take place in Al Marmoom, which was declared a desert conservation reserve by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai, in January.

Spanning 10 per cent of Dubai’s total land area, the 40-hectare unfenced reserve is home to hundreds of species of animals and birds, both native and migratory, and will provide the participants with a unique running experience. The ‘Desert Run at Al Marmoom’ is open to runners of all levels and age, and they can choose either the 5km run or the 10km. For the cycling enthusiasts, there is the 9th Get Together Ride in Hatta, which will be flagged off at 7am from the Hatta Mountain Bike Trail Centre.

There is also a “Walk For Arthritis” at Dubai Creek Park, starting 7.30am, and an Indian Tug of War at Zabeel Park from 3pm. For the youngsters, the TTD Super Cup Dubai under-16 football tournament is taking place at the Sevens, while the GEMS Schools will be hosting UAE Youth Hostels & HKSZ cricket Tour 2018 matches from 9am. There is a Dragon Boat Challenge as well at the Culture Village, Dubai Creek, from 8am. All the events are being supported by Dubai Sports Council, who have urged residents to take part in big numbers and spread the message of the World Physical Activity Day and the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace.

The World Health Organization (WHO) named April 6 as the World Physical Activity Day in 2002 following the huge success of that year’s inaugural World Health Day, which managed to mobilise 148 countries and saw a total of 1987 events being held under the slogan “Agita Mundo - Move for Health”. The slogan for this year's World Physical Activity Day is: “Be Active Everyday”. In 2013, the General Assembly of the United Nations decided to proclaim April 6 as the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace to commemorate the day the first Olympic games of the modern era, the 1896 Athens Olympics, were inaugurated.
