Avalanche warning in snow-capped areas of Hindukush

Pakistan Meteorological Department Islamabad (PMD) has warned of a high risk of avalanches in Chitral and other snow-capped areas of Hindukush in the wake an earthquake of magnitude 6.2.

PESHAWAR, (Pakistan Point News - 02nd Feb, 2018) : Pakistan Meteorological Department Islamabad (PMD) has warned of a high risk of avalanches in Chitral and other snow-capped areas of Hindukush in the wake an earthquake of magnitude 6.2. Deputy Commissioner Chitral has been sensitized regarding the upcoming avalanche situation in the snow bound areas in the District to take precautionary measures respectively in the vulnerable areas. Yesterday as per report by Additional AC Drosh, three employees of ptcl in Nagar Drosh valley were heading to Lowari Top for checking of PTCL tower, when an avalanche hit them.

One of the three persons remained unscathed while two are still missing. Eight members specialized Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) Team of Recue 1122 equipped with specialized equipment for snow-bound rescue operation was dispatched from Mardan to Lowari Top. The USAR team has reached District Chiral and the operation is underway till filing of this news. PDMA was in contact with District Administration Chitral for further coordination and provision of further possible assistance if any.

In another PDMA’s update report about earthquake dated January 31, 2018, preliminary damages/losses in District Peshawar were four minor injuries of school children reported due to panic situation in the Girls School of Landi Arbab (DDMO Peshawar). In district Swat, a visitor in a local hotel passed away due to heart attack as a result of jolts in the building. The report said PDMA was in contact with district administrations. So far, no serious damages or casualties have been reported from the entire province.
