Islamabad; (Pakistan Point News - 9 June, 2026) :
It is with great honour and a deep sense of responsibility that we celebrate the Day of Portugal, Camões and Portuguese Communities.
This occasion invites us to celebrate Portugal’s history, culture, language and values, as well as the enduring ties that unite Portuguese people across the world. It is also an opportunity to pay tribute to Luís de Camões, one of the greatest figures of world literature, whose work continues to embody Portugal’s spirit of openness, discovery and dialogue between cultures.
Portugal Day is also a celebration of the Portuguese Communities abroad. To all Portuguese citizens who live, work and represent our country beyond its borders, I extend my heartfelt gratitude and admiration. Through their dedication, talent and commitment, they strengthen Portugal’s presence in the world and serve as valuable bridges between peoples and nations.
It is particularly meaningful to celebrate this day in Pakistan, a country with which Portugal enjoys friendly and constructive relations.
Although separated by geography, our two nations share a rich history of contacts and exchanges, as well as a common commitment to dialogue, international cooperation and mutual respect.
The human dimension of our relationship has also become increasingly significant. Today, a growing number of Portuguese citizens have Pakistani roots and make valuable contributions to Portuguese society in diverse fields. Their presence reflects the close links that unite our countries and serves as a living bridge between Portugal and Pakistan, strengthening mutual understanding and friendship.
Over recent years, relations between Portugal and Pakistan have continued to develop positively across a range of areas, including political dialogue, trade and investment, education, culture and people-to-people exchanges. Our bilateral relationship is entering a particularly positive phase, marked by increasingly regular contacts and a shared commitment to deepen cooperation in areas of mutual interest. We remain committed to further strengthening this partnership and to exploring new avenues of cooperation that can benefit both our countries and peoples.
I would also like to acknowledge the dedication and professionalism of the staff of the Embassy of Portugal in Islamabad, whose daily work contributes to promoting Portugal and strengthening the ties between our two countries. My sincere appreciation also goes to Portugal’s Honorary Consuls in Karachi and Lahore, Mr. Fakir S. Ayazuddin in Karachi and Mr. Iftikhar Firoz in Lahore, whose commitment and support play an important role in fostering closer relations with Pakistani institutions, businesses and citizens across the country.
I would like to express my deep and sincere appreciation to the Pakistani Authorities, to the diplomatic corps, to representatives of the business, academic and cultural communities, o members of the media, and to all friends of Portugal who are also part of this celebration. You represent the friendship that exists between our countries and our shared confidence in an even stronger partnership for the future.
As we celebrate Portugal today, we also celebrate the friendship between Portugal and Pakistan and the values that bring us together: respect, dialogue, cooperation and mutual understanding.
Thank you for being part of this special occasion.
Long live Portugal, and long live the friendship between Portugal and Pakistan.
