US lifts visa ban on foreign students with new social media screening requirement

All applicants must now provide access to their social media accounts as part of the security vetting process

WASHINGTON: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-June 19th, 2025) The United States has lifted the temporary visa ban on foreign students, reinstating the student visa process with new conditions, according to American media reports.

The US State Department confirmed that the suspension orders issued in May have been revoked, and student visa processing has resumed. However, all applicants must now provide access to their social media accounts as part of the security vetting process.

Officials stated that the government will thoroughly review the applicants’ social media activity. Any posts deemed to be against the United States, its government, institutions, culture, or core values could lead to visa rejection.

Furthermore, the State Department has made it mandatory for applicants to make their social media accounts public. Failure to comply could result in denial of their visa review.

The move follows a temporary halt introduced by the Trump administration, which had paused the scheduling of student visa interviews and initiated stricter screening measures for social media activities of international students.
