United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Norway impose sanctions on two far-right Israeli ministers over incitement to violence against Palestinians
LONDON: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-June 10th, 2025) In a major diplomatic move, five Western countries — the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Norway — have imposed sanctions on two far-right Israeli ministers over incitement to violence against Palestinians and serious human rights violations.
The sanctions target Israel’s National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich. The punitive measures include potential asset freezes and visa restrictions in all five countries.
In a joint statement, British Foreign Secretary David Lammy said the decision reflects a unified commitment to uphold human rights and promote peace in the region. “This step is the only path to ensure security, dignity, and lasting stability for both Palestinians and Israelis,” he stated.
The sanctioned ministers have drawn international condemnation for their inflammatory rhetoric and policies. Ben Gvir recently advocated for the "voluntary migration" of Gaza residents, while Smotrich declared that Gaza “will be completely destroyed.” Both have also opposed the entry of humanitarian aid into the war-torn enclave.
“These actions are unacceptable,” Lammy added, noting that the UK and its allies have repeatedly warned the Israeli government against open violations of human rights.
The joint sanctions mark a rare rebuke of senior Israeli officials by close Western allies, highlighting growing international concern over Israel’s conduct in the occupied Palestinian territories.
