US to cancel visas of Chinese students associated with Communist Party

Students pursuing education in sensitive and high-tech fields will be among those affected by US latest visa policy

WASHINGTON: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-May 29th, 2025) The United States has announced a significant tightening of its visa policies for Chinese students, including the cancellation of visas for those allegedly affiliated with the Chinese Communist Party.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the move is part of a broader effort to protect national security and intellectual property. “The United States will revoke the visas of students associated with the Chinese Communist Party,” Rubio said, adding that students pursuing education in sensitive and high-tech fields would also be affected.

The US Department of State confirmed that it plans to revise the eligibility criteria for Chinese student visas. Going forward, all visa applications from China and Hong Kong will be subjected to enhanced scrutiny.

This decision follows a directive from the Trump administration instructing all U.S. embassies to halt scheduling new student visa appointments. The administration is expanding its vetting procedures to include a more comprehensive review of applicants’ social media profiles.

According to the reports, all foreign students — particularly from China — will be required to undergo extensive background checks, including an evaluation of their online presence.

However, the appointments already scheduled will proceed as planned.

In a related move, the Trump administration has also imposed restrictions on American companies, prohibiting them from selling certain products to China, signaling a further escalation in U.S.-China tensions.

The new policies are expected to impact thousands of Chinese students currently studying or planning to study in the United States, potentially straining educational and diplomatic relations between the two countries.
